JMK – One Last Time and Worth Every Second

In 2014, I had the privilege and honor to begin writing for three incredibly talented performers – Jaimie McMillin, Maria Aromando, and Kim Cupo. And on August 20th, our incredible three year journey together comes to end at The 2016 Kelsey Awards.

In 2009, I had this crazy idea to start an award show for the Kelsey Theatre community. The first two years, the Kelsey Awards were done solely online. In 2011, Kitty Getlik asked if I wanted to do an actual ceremony. Me, being the nerd that I am, jumped at the opportunity.

The first year I hosted on my own. The second year, I hosted with the triple-threat – Dominick Sannelli. And the third year, I hosted with alongside the witty and incredibly gracious/loving Mark Applegate.

When 2014 rolled around, I wanted to take a step back from hosting. I had no idea if anyone would be willing to take on this weird task, but I began my search anyway, in hopes that I would strike gold…

…and I most certainly did.

After playing with pairing and combinations in my head, I settled upon asking Jaimie, Maria, and Kim to be the hosts. If one of them were to say no, I would have scrapped the whole idea and started my search over again. Luckily for me… they all said YES!

Now I had the fun, yet challenging task of writing for them. The type of jokes that I would tell as a host wouldn’t necessarily fit their style of performing. Admittedly, the first year, I struggled mightily trying to figure out how I could write jokes for these three women.

As I sat on my laptop writing their songs and sketches, I kept thinking to myself, “There is no way they’re going to be game for this.” One of the first scenes I wrote was a sketch about Maria being sexually attracted to a puppet. I sat there thinking to myself, “These girls are gonna think I’m f***ing crazy.”

Finally, I sent JMK the first draft of the script. I sat there staring at the floor as they read through. “They’re gonna hate this,” I kept saying to myself. “They are going to regret signing on to do this. I hope Mark or Dom are ready to jump back in to host this thing because someone is gonna drop out of this.”

We read through the script and it CAME ALIVE! These three artists turned into these silly goofballs that went with my dumb ideas and swung for the fences. It’s like they all caught a case of the F**k-It Disease. They turned this crazy script into one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

“JMK” was born!

The day after hosting their first Kelsey Awards, I knew I wanted them back, though I didn’t ask them until March of 2015. The audience LOVED them. Shit, I loved them. All three of them exceed every ounce of expectation that I had… and THEN SOME. They took my pet project and helped take it to the next level. Thankfully, they agreed to return for the 2015 ceremony. (Which was another very successful run.)

Flash-forward to March 2016. I was on the fence about what I wanted to do hosting-wise. I was afraid that people would hate the show if they thought JMK, or the jokes I wrote for them, would be played out. I sat there, once again, staring at the floor. This time though, I was wondering who I could get to host.

I ended up coming up with two options: 1) We do the show without a host and just feature various Kelsey Theatre personalities throughout the show doing funny things and such. Or 2) Ask back JMK.

It was a no-brainer. I wanted JMK back one more time. I wanted one more chance to write for them. One more chance to give them the send-off they deserve for playing such a crucial role in making The Kelsey Awards one of the most anticipated theater events over the summer. They earned it. They deserved it. And as we reach the final two weeks of prep for the 2016 ceremony… it has turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for the show.
