When it comes to contemporary musical theater, the stand-out composers (to me, at least) are Andrew Lippa, Lin Manuel-Miranda (ever hear of him?), Jeanine Tesori, and every pianists’ favorite composer – Jason Robert Brown. (Or “JRB” as we call him in our nerdy theater circles.)
When people think about JRB, they either think about The Last Five Years, or they think about the little musical that has one of the biggest cult followings in the entire history of staged theater – Songs for a New World. This show, as I am sure most of you are aware, is most likely on every theater person’s iPod. (If it’s not, it should be.) And if you’re not familiar with the show, it’s about that time that you familiarize yourself, because it’s fascinating in every way.
Songs is a contemporary masterpiece song-cycle that is rarely done as a full production (most people opt to sing their favorite song from the show in a cabaret or something) … but on Saturday, May 21st, Central Jersey finally gets a chance to see a fully mounted production of the show with four of the best singers this area has to offer.

Travel through time with this incredible cast and set of musicians and come see why this show, as a whole, offers some of the most beautiful (and memorable) music you’ll ever hear. Navigate world history and personalized, intimate character moments, as this show is all about exploration and one’s journey toward change. While Bill, Tim, Tressa, and Shannen all play different characters in each song, they all have one thing in common – They are all right on the verge of a major personal transformation. And by God – it is EXHILERATING to watch go down.
This show is ONE NIGHT ONLY, so I highly recommend you purchase your tickets ahead of Saturday’s performance. I had the chance to sneak into a rehearsal of theirs last week, and let me tell you, this is NOT a show you want to miss – especially with these incredible voices.
